Field Hockey Falls To James Madison, 3-2

Charlottesville, Va. — James Madison scored three goals in the secondhalf, including two in a span of 56 seconds, to defeat the Cavaliers 3-2tonight. The Dukes battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to steal thewin from the Cavaliers.

Virginia got on the board first with a corner goal by MeredithElwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) at the 19:45 mark of the period. Shewas assisted on the play by Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./ShoreRegional). Coleman scored the second goal on a corner with 4:41 left in thehalf off assists from Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) andLaura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy). Becky Worthington(Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) made three saves in the first half as theCavaliers extended their shutout streak to six consecutive halves.

In the second half the Dukes stormed back. Julie Martinez tipped ina corner shot by Katrina Hunter at 16:05 to bring the Dukes within one.Martinez tied the game with 7:30 left as she tipped a ball overWorthtington on a breakaway. Just 56 seconds later Hunter notched theeventual game-winner as she connected on a corner with assists from SaraPerilla and Liz Sanders.

The Cavaliers continue their homestand with a game against #4 UNCon Sunday, Oct. 17. Game time against the Tar Heels is 1:00 pm.
