AUSTIN, Texas – University of Virginia third year tennis player BrianVahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) won his main draw singles match 7-6(2), 6-2 on Thursday in the First Round of the 1999 Reebok/IntercollegiateTennis Association (ITA) Men’s All-American Championships at thePenick-Allison Tennis Center at the University of Texas. Third yearHuntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) lost his first roundmatch today. Vahaly and Montgomery opened doubles play with a first roundvictory on Thursday as well.
Vahaly, the sixth seed in the tournament and ninth ranked player by theITA, defeated Jason Marshall of Purdue 7-6 (2), 6-2 on Thursday morning toadvance to the second round of the main draw. Vahaly will play Arkansas’Oscar Johansson in the second round on Friday. Johansson earned a 6-0,2-6, 6-3 victory over Virginia Tech’s Frank Moser in the first round.
After winning two matches in the qualifying tournament, Montgomery lost hisfirst round main draw match 6-1, 6-4 to fifth seeded Peter Handoyo ofTennessee. He moves to the consolation bracket where he will play ScottThompson of Texas A&M-CC. Montgomery, 76th in the Preseason ITA Rankings,was one of 16 players to advance through the qualifying tournament to the64-player main draw.
Vahaly and Montgomery, seeded fourth, opened doubles play by defeatingAdrian Barnes and John Paul Fruttero of California 6-3, 6-1 on Thursdayafternoon. In the second round on Friday, the UVa tandem will play MichaelChmela and Dan Kiernan of LSU, who were 6-2, 7-5 winners over Oklahoma’sCharlie Roberson and Rick Warren.
The Reebok/ITA Men’s All-American Championships, the second leg of the ITAGrand Slam, is the nation’s largest NCAA Division I tennis tournament withover 350 competitors. Prequalifying began on October 9. The Championshipsconsists of a 64-player singles and a 32-team doubles main draw October14-18. The singles draw features 48 players who received automatic berthsinto the main draw and 16 survivors from the qualifying tournament heldOctober 12-13. Six doubles teams advanced to the main draw from thequalifying tournament, which also took place October 12-13.
