Men’s Tennis Standout Wins At Second Round Singles

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Virginia third year tennis player BrianVahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) won his second round main drawsingles and doubles matches on Friday in the 1999 Reebok/IntercollegiateTennis Association (ITA) Men’s All-American Championships at thePenick-Allison Tennis Center at the University of Texas. Vahaly won hissingles match 7-6 (7), 6-3 on Friday morning, then teamed with third yearHuntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) in the afternoon to earna trip to the quarterfinals with a 6-5, 7-5 triumph in doubles portion ofthe All-American Championships.

Vahaly, the sixth seed in the singles tournament and ninth ranked player bythe ITA, defeated Oscar Johansson of Arkansas 6-2, 6-2 on Friday morning toadvance to Saturday’s round of 16. Vahaly will play South Carolina’sGuillaume Legate in the third round. Legate advanced with a 7-6 (7), 6-3win over Trace Fielding of LSU in the second round.

In doubles play, fourth-seeded Vahaly and Montgomery defeated MichaelChmela and Dan Kiernan of LSU 6-4, 7-5 in the second round Friday afternoonto advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals. The UVa tandem with play Baylor’sDavid Hodge and Mark Williams, who upset eighth seeded Daniel Andersson andFrank Moser of VCU, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Third year Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) opened theconsolation singles bracket with a victory over Scott Thompson of TexasA&M-CC. Montgomery, 76th in the Preseason ITA Rankings, led 7-6 (6), 1-0before Thompson retired with an injury. In the second round on Saturday,Montgomery will face Alex Osterieth of Arizona State, who defeatedKristofer Stahlberg of Mississippi 6-3, 6-1 in first-round consolationaction.

The Reebok/ITA Men’s All-American Championships, the second leg of the ITAGrand Slam, is the nation’s largest NCAA Division I tennis tournament withover 350 competitors. Prequalifying began on October 9. The Championshipsconsists of a 64-player singles and a 32-team doubles main draw October14-18. The singles draw features 48 players who received automatic berthsinto the main draw and 16 survivors from the qualifying tournament heldOctober 12-13. Six doubles teams advanced to the main draw from thequalifying tournament, which also took place October 12-13.
