CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccerteam, coming off an impressive 2-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth in itlast outing (10/9), looked to record its eighth win of the season againstACC-rival Clemson. The Cavaliers brought a slight 17-15-4 advantage intothe game with the Tigers and were looking to improve their 8-2-3 recordover Clemson in the 1990’s. After both teams played through a scorelessfirst half, the two teams combined for three goals in the second half. UVajumped out to an early 1-0 lead before Clemson recorded two goals just overtwo minutes apart to pull out a 2-1 victory over Virginia in front of 1,529spectators at Klockner Stadium.
First-year sensation Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples) put UVaon the scoreboard first at 69:31 when he gathered a loose ball and fired ashot from about 35 yards away that found the back of the net to make it a1-0 Cavalier lead.
However, the lead would not last long, as the Tigers answered rightback with a goal of their own at 82:15 when Alan Woods collected a looseball of his own shot that was deflected by UVa goalkeeper Kyle Singer(Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and directed the ball into the goalto knot the score at 1-1. Riding an emotional lift from its first goal,Clemson scored the eventual game-winning marker at 84:43 when Matt Elliottfired a shot off another loose ball near the UVa goal to make it a 2-1Tiger lead with just over five minutes to play. The Tiger defense held theCavalier offensive attack in check for the remainder of the game to sealthe 2-1 victory.
The win was Clemson’s first conference victory of the ’99 season.It was also the Tigers second consecutive victory over Virginia and thefirst win over UVa in Charlottesville since a 2-1 win on 10/10/93. TheCavaliers have now dropped three of their last four contests and now hold a17-16-4 lead in the series history.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 7-5-1 overall, 1-3-1 inthe ACC. Clemson improved its record to 4-5-2 overall, 1-1-2 in theconference. The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, October 20when UVa hosts the Marshall Thundering Herd. The game is scheduled tobegin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played at Klockner Stadium. Clemson willalso return home action on 10/20/99 to face Loyola of Chicago at 7:00 p.m.at Riggs Field.
