CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In the waning seconds of the first half,Virginia’s Darci Borski (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) capitalized ona rebound of a Tracey Lache (Littleton, CO/Heritage) shot to put Virginiaup 1-0. It would be the only goal that the Cavaliers would need, but JillMaxwell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) redirected a Katie Tracy (Richmond,Va./James River) shot off a corner kick to give the Cavaliers the insurancethey would use to defeat Oakland 2-0 today.
In the 45th minute, Lache took a shot that went off a defender andto the feet of Borski, who alertly popped the ball into the cage for the1-0 lead at the break. Lache’s and Borski’s shots were only the fourth andfifth for the Cavaliers in the half, who held the Grizzles to just one shotin the period. The Oakland shot was saved by Julie Harris (Ridgefield,Conn./Ridgefield), who earned the win in the nets for the Cavaliers.
In the frst 10 minutes of the second half, the Cavliers earned acouple of corner kicks. In the 56th minute, Laura Gaworecki (Houston,Tex./Klein) sent the corner to Tracy at the top of the box. Her shot to thelower left corner of the cage was redirected by Maxwell to put Virginia up2-0.
The Virginia defense has not allowed a goal in the last 252 minutes.
Virginia plays at home again on Friday, October 22against NorthCarolina. Game time against the Tar Heels is 7:00 pm.
