Women's Tennis Squad Falls To Princeton In Finals Of ECAC Team Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. — The University of Virginia women’s tennis team fell toPrinceton 5-4 in the finals of the 1999 ECAC Invitational Team Championshipon Sunday at the Lenz Tennis Center. The Cavaliers trailed 4-2 aftersingles play and needed to win all three doubles matches, but fell justshort as they were able to only capture the first two matches.
Princeton won the #1, #2 and #3 singles matches. Kavitha Krishnamurthydefeated second year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) 7-5, 6-4 at #1 andJoytsna Vasisht beat third year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial)6-3, 5-7, 6-3 at #2. Amanda Hastings-Phillips was a 6-3, 7-5 winner overfirst year Henriette Williams (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) at #3. TheCavaliers won the #4 and #5 singles matches as third year Leslie Cook(Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian) took a three-set 4-6, 6-4, 6-4decision at #4. At #5 singles, first year Jennifer Tuchband (Raleigh,N.C./Broughton) defeated Pryia Bhupathi 6-4, 6-4. At #6, third year KellyWeaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) won the first set over Kristi Watson 6-2,but lost the next two 7-6 (8) , 6-2 as Princeton took a 4-2 lead intodoubles play.
Virginia rebounded to tie the match as 4-4 with doubles wins at #2 and #3.O’Donnell and second year Christine Kim (McLean, Va./Bishop Ireton) teamedto defeat Krishnamurthy and Vasisht 8-4 at #2 doubles. At #3, Weaver andTuchband scored an 8-5 victory over Bhupathi and Watson to even the matchat 4-4. In the deciding #1 doubles match, Princeton’s Hastings-Phillipsand Gailor Large bested UVa’s Schweer and Cook 8-5.
