CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer teamlooked to get back to its winning ways with a home contest against theMarshall Thundering Herd. UVa did just that in convincing fashion, as theCavaliers scored an early first half goal before capitalizing on twoscoring opportunities in the second half to record a 3-0 shutout win overMarshall in front of 671 spectators at Klockner Stadium.
Virginia’s first goal of the contest came at 25:00 when KyleMartino (Westport, Conn./Staples) scored on a free kick after being fouledby a Thundering Herd defender. Martino’s shot was taken from about 25yards out diagonally left of the goal and was sent across the front of theMarshall goal. The ball passed through several players untouched and hitthe right post and ricocheted in for the eventual game-winning score. TheCavaliers would take their 1-0 lead into halftime.
Trying to put the game out of reach, UVa kept their offensiveattack on in the second stanza. Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie)scored Virginia’s second goal of the game at 49:54 when he gathered a crossfrom teammate Ryan Trout (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) and found the back ofthe Herd net to make it a 2-0 contest. The Cavaliers added an insurancegoal at 72:19 when Martino sent a pass upfield to Totten, who then sent across to teammate Sheldon Barnes (Miramar, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) whichgave UVa a 3-0 lead which it would not relinquish. Cavalier goalkeepersKyle Singer (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Nelson Cupello(Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) teamed together to post UVa’s fourthshutout this season in the 3-0 win.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 8-5-1 overall,while the loss drops Marshall’s record to 5-9-1 on the year. UVa is now3-0-0 all time against the Thundering Herd.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, October 24 when UVatravels to Durham, N.C. to face the Duke Blue Devils. The contest isscheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be played at Koskinen Stadium.Marshall will return to action on October 22-23 when the Thundering Herdheads south to begin competition in the Florida International Tournament.Marshall will face host Florida International at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct.22 before squaring-off against Jacksonville on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 5:00p.m.
