CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–Junior Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md.) won both the 500 and 1000-freestyle events to lead the 11th-ranked University of Virginia men’s swimming and diving team to a 138-103 victory over the seventh-ranked University of Tennessee Volunteers Friday afternoon (Oct. 22) at UVa’s Aquatic and Fitness Center. The meet was the first of the season for both teams.
Grimes won the 500-freestyle in a time of 4:32.82 and the 1000-freestyle in a time of 9:17.36.
Virginia won eight of the 13 events in the meet. Other individual winners for the Cavaliers included senior Austin Ramirez (Brookfield, Wisc.) in the 200-freestyle (1:40.41), freshman Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand) in the 200-individual medley (1:50.89), senior Doak Finch (Southern Pines, N.C.) in the 200-butterfly (1:48.53), junior Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah) in the 100-freestyle (46.20 seconds) and sophomore Ed Moses (Burke, Va.) in the 200-breaststroke (1:59.48). Finch, Moses, Johnson and sophomore Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va.) also won the 400-medley relay for Virginia.
Gabriel Chereches won both the one-meter (289.2) and three-meter (336.0) diving competition for Tennessee.
Virginia swept the top three places in both the 1000-freestyle and the 200-individual medley.
The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams compete at Clemson University on October 30.
