CLEMSON, S.C. – Freshman Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) won threeevents in her first collegiate meet to help lead the 11th-ranked Universityof Virginia women’s swimming and diving team to a 145.5-97.5 victory overClemson on Saturday afternoon at the McHugh Natatorium on Clemson’s campus.In the men’s meet, the Tigers upset the 11th-ranked Cavaliers 136-107. Themeet was the season-opener for the UVa women, while the men fall to 1-1after upsetting seventh-ranked Tennessee 138-103 on October 22.
Lane won the 500-free with a NCAA provisional time of 4:53.51 and the1000-free by more than 21 seconds, finishing in 9:53.47. She also won the200-fly with a NCAA provisional time of 2:01.49. Senior Rebecca Cronk(Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) won three events for the ‘Hoos as well.Individually, she won the 50-free in 23.66 and the 100 free with a time of51.95. Cronk teamed with sophomore Meghan Roesch (Columbia, Md./WildeLake), senior Emily Trakas (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and senior MeghanMcCubbins (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) to win the 400-free relay with atime of 3:30.66. Senior Laura Sullivan (Sarasota, Fla./Peddie School) tookfirst in the 200-free in 1:52.03, while freshman Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje,Macedonia/Trinity Prep) was first in the 200-individual medley in 2:04.62.Junior Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) won the 200-back with atime of 2:02.57.
For the Tigers, freshman Courtney Ellis won the 200-breast with atime of 2:20.82. The Clemson 200-medley relay team of Krystal Ball, MandyCommons, Katie Mizell and Jenna Burtch placed first in 3:50.81.
In the diving competition, Clemson junior Betsy Potter won thethree-meter competition with a score of 266.18. Virginia freshman AllisonSharp (Newton, Pa./Council Rock) won the one-meter competition with a scoreof 264.53. Sharp scored 254.63 points to finish second in the three-meterdiving as well. Junior Courtney Colbert (Brown Deer, Wisc./Rufus King)was second in the one-meter event with a score of 261.30.
In the men’s meet, Clemson’s 200 medley relay team of Adam Porter,Alejandro Dubreuil, Will Rogers and Rob Etheridge set a new Clemson poolrecord of 1:33.18 to open the meet and lead the Tigers to a 136-107. TheTigers won seven events, including both diving competitions. FreshmanCraig Thomas placed first in the one-meter diving competition with a scoreof 275.93 and won the three-meter event with a score of 300.53.
Virginia sophomore Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) won the 100-breastwith a NCAA provisional time of 55.36. Junior Jamie Grimes (Olney,Md./Sherwood) led a top-four UVa sweep in the 1000 free (9:19.78), andfreshman Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) was first inthe 200 I.M. with a time of 1:51.66. Senior Doak Finch (Southern Pines,N.C./O’Neal) won the 100 fly with a time of 50.06, and senior AustinRamirez (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central) won the 500 free in 4:33.59,beating teammates Grimes and junior Michael Fuller (Richmond, Va./MillsGodwin), who finished second and third with times of 4:34.21 and 4:37.69,respectively.
For Clemson, sophomore Kenny Roberts took first place in the 200-free(1:42.51), and senior Mike Pridemore won the 50-free in 21.02. Junior WillRogers won the 100-free in 46.06, and senior Adam Porter took first in the100-back with a time of 50.94. The Tigers’ 400-free relay team ofEtheridge, Rogers, Pridemore and Roberts won with a time of 3:05.40.
Virginia’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return toaction on Friday, November 5, when they host Pittsburgh at 1:00 p.m. andthe UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.
