CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Cavaliers got the treat, not the trick, as JessColeman’s (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) corner shot rocketed into thecage in overtime, giving the #12 Cavaliers a 3-2 decision over #10 Duke. Itwas Coleman’s second goal of the game, both coming on corner shots and bothassisted by Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and LauraLindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy).
Coleman put the Cavaliers ahead with 14:12 remaining in the firsthalf as she connected on a corner. Virginia went ahead 2-0 as MeredithElwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) poked the ball to Lorraine Vizzuso(Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) just 90 seconds before halftime. The Cavalierstook a 2-0 lead into halftime after holding the Blue Devils to just oneshot in the half.
In the second half the Blue Devils tied the game with a two-goalbarrage in a five minute span. Corey Ceccolini connected on a corner withassists from Angie North and Courtney Sommer at the 24:58 mark, and fiveminutes later Chrissy Ashley chipped in a loose ball in front ot the cageto tie the game.
With just over a minute to play, Duke had a corner and Ceccolini’sshot hit the post and went out of play. The teams ended regulation with a2-2 tie.
In the overtime period, the Cavaliers had a breakaway with a 2v1but got the ball trapped in their feet to nullify that chance. They wereawarded a corner two minutes later but were not able to get off a cleanshot. Duke also was awarded a corner in the overtime period but they werenot able to control the pass and the Cavaliers were able to clear the ball.On Virginia’s second corner of the period Coleman connected for thegame-winner, her fifth of the season.
Virginia’s Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton)played the entire time in goal and recorded three saves on the day.
Goodloe’s two assists on the day give her 18 for the season, thesecond-highest total for a sophomore in school history, behind Lindsay’s 19in 1997. She also now has 23 in her career, which is ninth all-time atVirginia. Lindsay now has 43 career assists, which ranks second at Virginiaand eighth in the ACC in history.
The Cavaliers improve to 12-6 on the season and are the #4 seed inthe 1999 ACC Championships this weekend. They will take on #5 Duke onThursday, Nov. 4 at 4:00 pm at Wake Forest’s Kentner Stadium.
