Jones One of Eight Semifinalists For Doak Walker Award

DALLAS – The Southwestern Bell?SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors today announced the eight semifinalists for the 1999 Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award, annually presented to the top running back in college football since 1990. The semifinalists are (in alphabetical order):
Shaun Alexander Alabama, Senior
Trung Canidate Arizona, Senior
Ron Dayne Wisconsin, Senior
Thomas Jones Virginia, Senior
LaMont Jordan Maryland, Junior
Hodges Mitchell Texas, Junior
Travis Prentice Miami, (Ohio) Senior
LaDainian Tomlinson TCU, Junior
The 189 members of the Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee cast their votes next week to determine the 1999 winner. College football fans will also have an opportunity to play a role. By logging on to ESPN.com anytime between November 24 and noon (CST) on Wednesday, December 1, fans may cast their votes from the eight semifinalists.
The results of the ESPN.com poll will count as one official vote. Three finalists will be named on Tuesday, December 2, and on Thursday, December 9, the winner of the 1999 Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN2’s Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The award will be presented at the 1999 Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet in Dallas on Monday, January 24, 2000.
Former Ohio State running back Archie Griffin, who earlier this month was selected to receive the 1999 PricewaterhouseCoopers Doak Walker Legends Award, will also be honored at the banquet.
