Jones Named To 1999 Walter Camp Squad

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia tailback Thomas Jones is joinedby four players from Florida State and three from Penn State on the WalterCamp 1999 All-America team-the nation’s oldest collegiate all-star squadthat dates back to 1889.

The Camp selection is the third All-America squad Jones has been named tothis week. He was named to the Football News and Football WritersAssociation of America teams earlier in the week. Jones becomes the firstCavalier named to the Camp team since guard Mark Dixon in 1993 and joinsformer North Carolina star Don McCauley as the only running backs inAtlantic Coast Conference history named to the team.

Jones, a senior from Big Stone Gap, Va., broke McCauley’s ACC single-seasonrecords for most yards rushing (1,798) and all-purpose yards (2,054) thisfall, finishing third in the nation in rushing and second in all-purposeyards.

This marks the second year in a row Jones has led the ACC in rushing,becoming the first player since Ethan Horton of North Carolina (1983-84) tolead the conference in back-to-back seasons.

Jones also led the ACC in rushing touchdowns (16), total touchdowns (17)and receptions by a running back (22) this season. His four 200-yard gamesin ’99 tied for the national lead and is the most ever in a season by anACC player. Prior to this season, the ACC record for career 200-yard gameswas three-Jones finishes his career with six. Jones owns at least seven ACCand 14 school records.
