Baseball Goes Down to Wake Forest, 13-4

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Wake Forest outfielder Scott Daeley went 4-for-5 with a homer and three runs scored to lead the Demon Deacons to a 13-4 victory over the University of Virginia baseball team. Wake Forest totaled 14 hits on the day, while scoring at least one run in each of the first seven innings. The Demon Deacons improve to 33-17 overall and 12-10 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Cavaliers fall to 26-20-1 overall and 5-14 in the ACC.

In addition to Daeley, four other Wake Forest players had two hits on the day. Danny Borrell went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and four RBI, while Andrew Riepe was 2-for-5 with a double, a homer and two RBI. Both Jon Palmieri and Corey Slavik went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Demon Deacons, while Will Rikard added a solo home run.

For Virginia, senior outfielder Ted Kinsman (Vienna, Va.) led the offense by going 3-for-5 with a double and a stolen base. Freshman catcher Mark Rueffert (Herndon, Va.) was 2-for-4 with a RBI, while senior second baseman Ryan Gilleland (Forest, Va.) went 2-for-5 with a double. In addition, both junior first baseman Javier Lopez (Fairfax, Va.) and senior pinch hitter Keith Haney (Barboursville, Va.) had RBI singles for the Cavaliers.

The game was tied 1-1 after one inning before Wake Forest scored five runs in the top of the second. Palmieri and Slavik both had RBI singles in the inning, while Riepe hit a two run homer. Rikard hit a solo homer to lead off the third, while Borrell hit a two run homer in the fourth to give the Demon Deacons an insurmountable 9-1 lead.

Sophomore righthander Mike MacDougal picked up the victory for Wake Forest, allowing three runs on eight hits in six innings of work, while striking out 10. Senior righthander Peter Princi picked up a save for the Demon Deacons, as he pitched the final three innings and allowed only one run on two hits.

Sophomore righthander Casey Kennedy (Boca Raton, Fla.) took the loss for the Virginia, surrendering nine runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. Freshman lefthander Jon Metzger (Fairfax Station, Va.) pitched well in relief for the Cavaliers, tossing 3-2/3 innings and striking out three while allowing only two hits and no earned runs.

Virginia and Wake Forest will conclude their three-game series tomorrow, Apr. 26, with a 1:00 p.m. contest.
