CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Chris Albright netted two goals for the second consecutive game here Saturday night as the No. 5 Virginia Cavaliers knocked off No. 20 Virginia Commonwealth 3-2 at Klockner Stadium. UVa improves to 12-2-2 on the season, while VCU falls to 10-4-3.

The Wahoos took an early lead thanks to Albright’s first goal at the 5:44 mark. Jason Moore’s free kick found a seem in the VCU defense and Albright headed it into the back of the net. Virginia tacked on another goal just before the half when Ryan Trout displayed exceptional dribbling skills. Trout took the ball 40 yards out, dribbled in and then drilled a shot just inside the left post from 20 yards in the 41st minute.

Albright gave the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead at the 60:48 mark on his second goal of the evening. Trout played the ball into the middle where Sheldon Barnes one-time pass found Albright one-on-one with the keeper. Albright’s score gives him 18 goals on the season, now just five shy of A.J. Woods’ single-season mark for UVa.

However, in the next seven and a half minutes, things got interesting. The Rams’ Trevor Spencer put a shot in from 25 yards out at the 65:34 mark to break the shutout. A clearance following a VCU free kick ricochet went right to Spencer, who found the left side of the net open.

Less than three minutes later, in the 69th minute of play, Kevin Jeffrey cut the Virginia lead to one with the assist coming from Ricardo Capilla.

That was as close as the Rams would come, though, as UVa stepped up its defense and held on for the victory. VCU out-shot the Cavaliers 18-14 with a 10-4 advantage in the second half. It marked the first time in 16 all-time meetings that VCU has scored two goals in a game against UVa. Still, Virginia has never been beaten by the visitors from Richmond, holding a 15-0-1 advantage in the series.

The Cavaliers will travel to Virginia Beach Tuesday to battle William & Mary at 7 p.m.
