Women's Soccer Plays Fourth Overtime Game of Season

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Katie Tracy’s (Richmond, Va./James River) header into the back of the net, with less than five minutes remaining inthe match, helped the University of Virginia Cavaliers to tie the PortlandPilots 1-1 today in the first round of the Coca-Cola Classic at Kloeckner Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Pilots struck first on a free kick five yards outside the penalty box due to a foul by a Cavalier defender. Senior forward Tara Koleski shot the ball in the upper left corner of the goal, over the head of Virginia goalkeeper Julie Harris (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), to put them up 1-0.
The Cavaliers battled back to tie the game in the 85th minute. Tracy took the ball off a corner kick from Laura Gaworecki (Houston, TX/ Cypress Creek) and headed it past Portland goalie Cheryl Loveless. The score remained 1-1 through the two overtime periods.
The Cavaliers had 14 shots and nine corner kicks while the Pilotstook 11 shots and had three corner kicks. Harris made seven saves while Loveless made eight.
The Cavaliers have gone to overtime in half of their games this season. This is the second greatest number of overtime games in a season(6, 1994). Virginia’s record in overtime matches this season is now 2-1-1.
In the Classic’s first game, the United States Naval Academy scoredthe game’s final three goals to defeat the Richmond Spiders 3-1. Portlandwill face Navy (7-1) on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1:00 in the second round of theCoca Cola Classic, while Virginia will take on the University of Richmond(4-2-1) at 3:00.
