CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head football coach George Welsh announced responsibility changes for three members of the Cavaliers’ defensive coaching staff on Wednesday (March 24) as UVa prepares to begin spring practice.

Rick Lantz will focus on his responsibilities as defensive coordinator and will not coach a position. Lantz has been the defensive coordinator at Virginia since 1991 and has coached the Cavaliers linebackers since 1993.

David Turner will coach the UVa linebackers after coaching the defensive tackles the last two years. Ty Smith, who joined the Virginia staff as defensive ends coach last year, will coach both the defensive tackles and ends.

Art Markos will continue to coach Virginia’s defensive backs. Markos has been a member of the UVa football coaching staff for 17 years and has coached the defensive backs since 1991.

The Cavaliers begin their 1999 spring practice period on Thursday (March 25).
