COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.–United States Field Hockey Coach Pam Hixon named Virginia’s Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) and Lori Mastropietro (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock) to the United States Field Hockey team today. The US will compete in the International Federation of Hockey World Cup in Utrecht, the Netherlands, May 20-31. The United States won the bronze medal in the 1994 World Cup.
Vizzuso was named to the All-American squad for the third conescutive year in 1997 as the Cavaliers advanced to the national semifinals for the first time in school history. Her 21 assists in 1997 set a new standard for assists in a season and she ranks third all-time at Virginia with 35 assists. She is the only player in school history to have 30 goals and 30 assists in her career.
Mastropietro was named a third-team All-American in 1997 and was an All-ACC selection in 1997 as well. As sweeper, she anchored the stingiest defense in the country in 1997 as the Cavaliers led the nation with a .818 goals-against average. Mastropietro was also a striker on penalty corners, scoring 12 goals.
Also named as an alternate to the squad was Virginia teammate Meridith Thorpe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs).
