CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– University of Virginia football coach George Welsh announced Wednesday that quarterback Aaron Brooks and safety Anthony Poindexter have been selected captains for the 1998 season in a vote by their teammates.

Brooks, a rising senior from Newport News, Va., led the Atlantic Coast Conference in passing last season in his first season as a starter. He completed 164 of 270 passes (60.7 percent) for 2282 yards and 20 touchdowns. A dangerous scrambler, he was second on the team in rushing with 255 yards and tied for the lead among ACC quarterbacks with five rushing touchdowns.

Poindexter, a rising senior from Forest, Va., was named a first-team All-America by The Sporting News last season. The two-time first-team All-ACC selection led Virginia with four interceptions and led the team’s defensive backs with 78 tackles. He is the leading tackler in school history among defensive backs with 269 total stops.

The Cavaliers kick off their 1998 campaign on September 3 with a Thursday night contest at Auburn. Virginia finished with a 7-4 record last season, its 11th consecutive season with at least seven victories.
