Football Program Recognized for Graduation Rate

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The University of Virginia has been recognized by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) for its graduation rate involving football players.

The survey involved those individuals from the freshman class of the 1992-93 academic year who received athletically-related financial aid as a member of an NCAA Division I-A institution’s football squad.

Northwestern University received the 1998 AFCA Academic Achievement Award for having the highest graduation rate in the survey. Virginia is one of 24 football programs to receive honorable mention status for having a graduation rate of 70 percent or better. The survey included 79 institutions.

UVa is one of three Atlantic Coast Conference schools to receive honorable mention recognition. The others are Duke and Wake Forest.

Other schools receiving honorable mention recognition are Boston College, Bowling Green, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon, Penn State, Rice, Southern Methodist, Syracuse, Tennessee, Tulane, Vanderbilt, Washington and Wisconsin.

Virginia won the Academic Achievement Award in 1985 and 1986, and has been recognized for its graduation rate among football players for each of the last 15 years.

This year marks the first time the Academic Achievement Award is presented by the AFCA. The award was previously presented by the College Football Association.
