Four Softball Players Named to 1998 All-Conference Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Beth Crimi, Lori Reese, Tish Tablan and Stacey Zagol were each named to the 1998 All-ACC Softball team. Virginia and Florida State, who faced off in the championship game of this year’s ACC Tournament, each claimed four spots on this year’s team.
Crimi, UVa’s lone senior from Middle Island, N.Y., played in 65 of Virginia’s 66 games (started 34) as catcher or designated hitter. She posted a (.306) batting average and finished third on the team with 55 hits, including a team-high 15 doubles. She gathered 17 RBI and scored 13 runs and finished second on the team with 211 putouts. Crimi was named ACC Player of the Week on April 21.
Reese, a junior from Shippensburg, Pa., started all 66 games for UVa at shortstop. She batted (.311), finishing second on the team in hits (61), RBI (25), stolen bases (9) and tied Crimi with a team-high 15 doubles. Reese recorded two triples, one homerun and gathered a team-high 146 assists to go along with 82 putouts. She was selected to the Sports Plus Collegiate Classic All-Tournament team, as she recorded five hits, five RBI and scored a run to help UVa capture the tournament crown, and was named to the All-Tournament team in the ACC tournament.
Tablan, a junior from Atlanta, Ga., battled a wrist injury most of the season before coming on strong for Virginia down the stretch. She started 19 of the 32 games she played in. Tablan batted (.333) while recording 18 hits, six runs and four RBI. She finished second on the team with nine stolen bases.
Zagol, a sophomore from Berwyn, Pa., was one of UVa’s top pitchers. She started 31 of the 41 games she played in, covering 239.1 innings of work. Zagol finished with a record of 19-15 and an ERA of (1.55). She pitched 29 complete games, posting eight shutouts and collected two saves. She held opponents to a (.156) batting average, gathered 98 assists, nine putouts and recorded one hit. She was named ACC Player of the Week twice and was selected to the All-Tournament teams in the Winthrop Invitational, the Sports Plus Collegiate Classic Tournament and in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
North Carolina’s Brandy Arthur was named Player of the Year. UNC’s Radara McHugh was named Rookie of the Year and Tar Heel head coach Donna Papa was named Coach of the Year.
