CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head football coach George Welsh has been selected to receive the Joseph Sheehan Division I-A Coach of the Year Award from the Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association. The award will be presented at the Eastern College Football Awards Banquet on February 16.

Welsh led the Cavaliers to a 9-3 record and a berth in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl during the 1998 season. It marked the 12th consecutive season Virginia has won at least seven games and the Cavaliers are one of only four Division I-A programs to accomplish that feat. The others are Florida State, Michigan and Nebraska.

Virginia has compiled an overall record of 121-75-3 and competed in 10 bowl games in Welsh’s 17 years as the Cavaliers’ head coach. He is the winningest coach in UVa and Atlantic Coast Conference history.

Welsh was the head coach at the United States Naval Academy for nine years before moving to Virginia. His Navy teams compiled an overall record of 55-46-1. Welsh’s overall record in 26 years as a collegiate head coach is 176-121-4.
