Golfers Finish Seventh at ACC Championships

NEW LONDON, N.C. – The University of Virginia golf team finished seventh todayat the annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at the Old NorthState Club in New London, N.C. This marks the first time since 1994 theCavaliers failed to finish in the top half of the field.

Georgia Tech shot a blistering 285 this afternoon to claim the team title.The Yellow Jackets entered today’s final round with a one-stroke lead overNorth Carolina but finished 10 strokes ahead of the Tar Heels and Duke witha 54-hole total of 863 (1-under par).

Duke’s Matt Krauss took medalist honors with a 4-under par 212. He finishedone stroke ahead of Georgia Tech’s Mike Pearson and two strokes ahead ofPearson’s teammate, Wes Latimer.

Freshman Steve Marino was the Cavaliers’ top finisher in his bestperformance since the Golf Digest Collegiate last month. He finished in atie for 22nd place with a 7-over par 223.

Marino was followed closely by Mike Mitchell who finished in a tie for 26thplace with a 10-over 226. Cameron Yancey finished tied for 29th with a 227,while James Driscoll finished tied for 32nd at 230. Shep Stevens finished45th with a 256.

Virginia returns to action next weekend at the Wofford Invitational inSpartanburg, S.C.
