James Driscoll Named First-Team All-State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — University of Virginia golfer James Driscoll was named to the first-team All-State golf team in voting by the head coaches at Virginia’s nine NCAA Division I schools. Driscoll’s teammates Lewis Chitengwa and Cameron Yancey were named to the second team.

Driscoll, a rising junior from Chestnut Hill, Mass., headlines the first team as the leading vote-getter. He was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection for the second consecutive season this year and led the Cavaliers with a 72.45 stroke average, the second-best average in school history.

Driscoll represented UVa at the NCAA Championships, competing as an individual, but failed to make the cut after 36 holes.

Chitengwa, a senior this past season, was a four-year starter for the Cavaliers and was one of the team’s top players throughout his career. He is the first golfer in school history to participate in four NCAA regional tournaments. Chitengwa finished this season with a 74.32 stroke average, second on the team behind Driscoll.

Yancey, a rising sophomore from Blackstone, Va., had a fine spring season in 1998, highlighted by a third-place finish at the Golf Digest Collegiate (won by Virginia). He finished third on the team with a 74.38 stroke average. Yancey was the medalist at last week’s Virginia State Amateur golf championships and reached the semifinals for the second consecutive year.
