Men's Golf Fifth at LSU Tournament

BATON ROUGE, La. – James Driscoll turned in his second consecutive top-five performance to help the University of Virginia golf team to a fifth-place finish in an 11-team field at the Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate tournament in Baton Rouge, La., in the Cavaliers final action of the fall season. The Cavaliers shot a 54-hole total of 887 and missed a fourth-place finish by one stroke.

Driscoll, who finished in a tie for second at last weeks Duke Classic, tied for fourth place with a 1-under par 215 (72-72-71). The junior from Chestnut Hill, Mass., was Virginia’s low man in four of five tournaments this fall.

Sophomore Mike Mitchell continued his strong play of late with his third top-20 finish in a row as the Cavaliers posted their third impressive finish to end the fall season. Mitchell finished tied for 11th place with a 3-over par 219 (74-70-75). His 70 in yesterdays second round was Virginias low round of the tournament.

Sophomore Cameron Yancey finished tied for 30th at 224 (74-77-73); freshman Steve Marino placed 39th with a 229 (76-76-77) and freshman Shep Stevens finished 59th with a 261 (87-91-83).

East Tennessee State was the only team to finish under par for the tournament with a 2-under par 862 to win the title. The Buccaneers posted a five-stroke victory over South Carolina.

East Tennesees David Chrisensen was medalist by three strokes over North Floridas Erik Labitzke. Christensen fired a 7-under 209 (69-70-70) and never had worse than the second-best round in any round to win.
