CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virg. – Cavalier junior defender Michael Green (Columbia, Md./Howard) assisted on Virginia’s game-winning goal 31 minutes into the contest and added the Cavaliers last goal with seven minutes to play as the Cavaliers shutout the Wolfpack 4-0 tonight in Charlottesville. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 8-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the ACC.

The Cavaliers and the Pack battled through a tough first half, with the only score coming in the 31st minute as Green sent a ball into the goal box where Sheldon Barnes (Miramar, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) punched it into the back of the net for what would prove to be the game-winner. The Pack almost got an equalizer seven minutes later but Brock Yetso (Columbia, Md./Centennial) made two diving saves to send the teams into halftime with the Cavaliers leading 1-0.

In the second half, Ryan Trout (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) collected a loose ball and sent it to the middle of the field, where Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie) and Barnes battled a pair of N. C. State defenders for possession. Totten got a foot on the ball and rocketed it towards the cage. It glanced off a defender and angled off and State keeper Eric Handley was not able to get a good handle on the ball, which gave the Cavaliers the 2-0 lead in the 61st minute.

Chris Albright (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) continued his scoring streak with a conversion of a Mike Feller (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) through ball in the 79th minute as Albright beat his defender. Just four minutes later Green stuck back a Ryan Trout shot off a corner. Greens shot ricocheted off the top crossbar and into the net, sending the Cavaliers to the 4-0 lead.

The Virginia offense came alive in the second half while the defense shut down the Wolfpack. The Cavaliers outshot N.C. State 15-1, but Handley was impressive in net, recording nine saves in the contest, including seven in the second half.

The Cavaliers return to action next Friday, October 9, as they host the Coca-Cola Classic. Virginia faces American in the night cap, while Adelphi takes on Marshall in the tournaments first game, which will take place at 5:00.
