CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore forward Chris Albright (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored two goals, one of them the game winner, as the seventh-ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team posted a 4-1 victory over No. 17 Maryland at Kloeckner Stadium. The Cavaliers opened the scoring at the 8:40 mark on a goal by freshman midfielder Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J.). The play began when sophomore midfielder Jason Moore (Lawrenceville, Ga.) had the ball near midfield on the left side and dribbled in toward the center before sending a pass ahead to Totten in the right side of the penalty box. Totten took the pass and dribbled once before scoring from 12 yards out.
Virginia improved its lead to 2-0 at 32:20 when Albright scored his first goal. Totten intercepted a pass 35 yards out in the center and played it ahead to Albright in the right center of the box. Albright ran in and one-timed the ball into the net from 14 yards away. The Cavaliers would make the score 3-0 before the intermission on an unassisted goal by freshman forward Sheldon Barnes (Miramar, Fla.) at 42:27. Barnes stole the ball from a defender 40 yards out on the right side and beat another defender before scoring from 16 yards away.
The Cavaliers made the score 4-0 in the second half, on Albright’s second goal at the 58:59 mark. The play began when sophomore midfielder Drew O’Donnell (Newtown Square, Pa.) had the ball on the left wing and played it ahead to Totten in the left side of the box. Totten then redirected the ball toward the center, where Albright headed it in from 12 yards away. The Terrapins avoided the shutout on an unassisted goal by Taylor Twellman at 80:53. Twellman stole the ball from a defender above the left side of the penalty box and dribbled in toward the net before scoring from 16 yards away.
