CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – It took 104 minutes and one second, but No. 5 University of Virginia made Fairleigh Dickinson its 500th all-time victim here Wednesday night as the Cavaliers knocked off the Knights 2-1 in overtime. UVa is now 11-2-2 on the season, while FDU falls to 7-8-2.

Virginia becomes the first Atlantic Coast Conference team to reach the 500-victory plateau and only the fifth program ever. Duke is the next closest ACC team with 492 wins.

However, the celebration was almost put on hold as the visiting Knights stretched the Wahoos to the limit. Shiran Adiri netted an unassisted goal in the 24th minute of play to put FDU ahead 1-0. That would be the only shot on goal of the first half for the Knights, while UVa had 16 first-half chances and 39 shots on the evening.

Adiri’s goal stood until the 87:12 mark when Chris Albright tied the score with a header off a cross from Chris Chulis. The goal snapped a string of bad luck for the ‘Hoos, which saw FDU make 17 saves on the evening. Virginia had just missed on several opportunities, including a Sam Franklin direct kick that hit the right post and bounced wide with just under 20 minutes to play.

In overtime, UVa continued its hightened pressure on the FDU defense and tallied four more shots on goal before the game winner. It was again Albright finding the cords, this time on a header on the right side off a cross from Jason Moore. The pass from Moore was set up by a downfield pass from Neil Bianco, giving each an assist on the play. For Albright, it was his fourth multiple-goal match of the season. His season total now stands at 16 goals, tied with four former Cavs, including head coach George Gelnovatch, for ninth in school history.

Virginia will return to action Saturday as they host No. 20 Virginia Commonwealth at 5 p.m. in the front end of a doubleheader with the women’s team.
