Men's Soccer Falls to Connecticut

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Connecticut forward Bobby Rhine scored two goals as the 18th-ranked Huskies posted a 4-3 victory over the fourth-ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team in an exhibition game at Klckner Stadium. The Cavaliers held a 16-11 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks, but were unable to take advantage of their scoring opportunities in the second half. With the loss, Virginia concludes the exhibition season with a 1-1 record.
The Cavaliers opened the scoring at the 6:31 mark when freshman forward Sheldon Barnes (Miramar, Fla.) knocked home a cross by freshman midfielder Marshall Leonard (Midland, Ga.) from 20 yards out in the center. Connecticut tied up the score at 29:56 mark Rhine took a pass from Maurizio Rocha and broke free behind the UVa defense for his first goal. The Cavaliers would regain the lead before the intermission when sophomore forward Chris Albright (Philadelphia, Pa.) took a pass from Barnes in the left side of the box and scored from 14 yards out at 41:45.
Connecticut took control of the game with three straight goals to start off the second half. Luis Arauz tied the game at 2-2 when he headed in a cross from Brent Rahim at 55:34. The Huskies took the lead only 19 seconds later, when Rhine put home a rebound after a shot by Gerneil Lorne had been saved. Connecticut increased its lead to 4-2 at 62:40 when Rocha scored from 20 yards out at the top of the box following a free kick by Arauz.
Virginia scored the final goal of the game at the 63:07 mark, when senior midfielder Sam Franklin (Arlington, Va.) worked a give-and-go with sophomore forward Ryan Trout (Media, Pa.) and scored from 12 yards out in the right side of the box.
Virginia opens the regular season on Friday, Sept. 4, when it takes on San Diego. The game will be played in Fullerton, Calif., on the opening day of the Fila Classic.
