CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior midfielder Drew O’Donnell (Newtown Square,Pa.) scored a goal and an assist and sophomore midfielder Jason Moore(Lawrenceville, Ga.) added a pair of assists as the University of Virginiamen’s soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over St. John’s in an exhibitiongame at Klckner Stadium. The Cavaliers dominated play in the first half,outshooting the Red Storm 9-1 before the intermission and holding a 2-0edge at the break.
The Cavaliers opened the scoring at the 33:28 mark on O’Donnell’s goal. Theplay began when Moore had the ball in the center of the field and played itto sophomore forward Ryan Trout (Media, Pa.) at the top right corner of thepenalty box. Trout then sent the ball to O’Donnell in the right corner,before O’Donnell dribbled past a defender and into the box. He then sent across toward the goal, which deflected off a Red Storm defender and hit thefar post before bouncing into the goal.
Virginia’s second score came at the 40:47 mark on a goal by freshmanforward Sheldon Barnes (Miramar, Fla.). O’Donnell had the ball in thecenter of the field and played it to Moore on the left flank. Moore thendribbled into the box and sent a cross to Barnes, who headed it in fromeight yards out at the far post.
Senior Brock Yetso (Columbia, Md.) recorded a shutout in goal for theCavaliers, making two saves. Jeffrey Stoklosa and Daniel Popik both playedhalf the game in goal for St. John’s, making two saves each.
Virginia will play its second and final exhibition game this Wednesday,Aug. 26, when it plays host to Connecticut in a 7:00 p.m. game at KlcknerStadium.
