Montreal, CANADA–Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton), one of the goalies on the top-ranked Virginia field hockey defense, recorded a shutout to help the United States Under-19 field hockey team win its opening match at the 1998 Montreal Cup in Montreal, Canada. Worthington was stellar in goid not allow a goal ial as the Americans did not allow a goal in the opening day of competition as they won the opener 10-0 over NHGranite.

Worthington continued her impressive career in goal as she finished the 1997 NCAA season as on teamed with fellow goalie Ellen Wiese (the nation’s top goalie, recording a remarkable .919 goals against average. Worthington teamed with fellow goalie Ellen Wiese (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) as the Cavaliers recorded the nation’s best scoring defense, allowing less than a goal per game.

The United States Under-19 team will continue action at the Montreal Cup tomorrow. The Stars and Stripes will play a pair of games on Independence Day against two Canadian teams, Ndestruk and Nova Scotia. Virginia has a couple representatives on the team, including Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex). The assistant coach of the team is Virginia assistant coach John Kovach.
