CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — Head football coach George Welsh welcomes 22 newcomersto the University of Virginia on Monday (Aug. 9) as the Cavaliers begintheir preparations for the 1999 season.

The newcomers will receive medical examinations on Monday and beginworkouts the following day. They will also practice among themselves onAug. 11. The upperclassmen are slated to report on Aug. 12. Full squadpractices are scheduled to start on Aug. 14.

The Cavaliers open the 1999 season at North Carolina on Sept. 4. Kickoff isset for noon and will be televised by ABC.

Virginia has been picked to finish third this season by media attending theannual ACC Football Kickoff in Greensboro, N.C., on July 19-20. TheCavaliers are listed in several preseason rankings so far this summer,including #16 by Street & Smith’s, 19th by Athlon, 23rd by Football Newsand 24th in the USA Today/ESPN preseason coaches poll.
