GAME 3: Virginia 3, Michigan 2, ot-The University of Virginia field hockey team won its home opener today against Michigan (3-2) much like it won the first game of the 1999 campaign–in overtime. Virginias Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) blocked in a pass from USA Team member Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) with 4: 28 passed in overtime to send the Cavaliers to their third consecutive win. Coleman, who scored both of the Cavaliers goals in regulation, was a part of all three goals for Virginia today.
Virginia opened the scoring 3:40 into the contest with what proved to be foreshadowing as Coleman blocked in a pass from Vizzuso in much the same way these two would hook up later. Vizzuso took a through ball to the endline and sent the ball across the mouth of the cage and Coleman knocked it in for the early lead. But Michigan answered with a goal 7 minutes later as the Wolverines converted one of their five first half corners. Kelli Gannon knocked in the ball with assists from Courtney Reid and Catherine Foreman to tie the game for the visitors. The Wolverines went ahead on another corner play 13 minutes into the second half. Reid was the goal scorer for Michigan this time with an assist from Gannon, giving the Wolverines a 2-1 lead.
It was the first time this season that the Cavaliers have been behind in a match. The Cavaliers tied the game with their own corner conversion with just 2:32 to play. Coleman was the scorer with an assist from Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy). The teams ended regulation tied at 2-2. In the overtime period, Coleman took the ball down to the right side of the goal on the endline and sent a ball across the mouth of the cage where Vizzuso sent it into the net, giving the Cavaliers the victory. Virginias goalie Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton)played the entire 75 minutes and registered 8 saves.
GAME 4: Virginia 9, Quinnipiac 0–The Cavaliers (4-0) used a stifling defense that allowed Towson (1-3) only five shots, all in the first half, and created offensive opportunities that helped Virginia shut out Towson 9-0. USA Team member Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) scored the opening goal just 3:15 into the game and assisted on the final goal to help pace the Cavalier attack. Coleman stuck back a Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) shot to give the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish.
Although the Hoos were able to create chances, they could not convert them until Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) stuck in a Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) pass to put Virginia up 2-0. Vizzuso assisted on the next goal on a breakaway as she took the ball down the flank and sent a hard cross into Rosie Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) who deflected the ball up and into the cage for the third goal. The Cavaliers Kelli Hill (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) collected a rebound of a Coleman corner shot with 4:36 remaining in the first half to give Virginia a 4-0 lead at the break.
Vizzuso and Elwell connected for the first goal of the second period on another breakway just 3:10 into the period. Goodloe scored her first goal of the season as she blasted a shot into the cage just over two minutes later. Elwell then dribbled through the defense along the endline and flipped the ball into the cage two minutes after Goodloes goal to give Virginia a 7-0 lead.
The Cavaliers Taylor Rountree (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) scored both of the last two Virginia goals in a span of 3:11. Her first collegiate goal came at the 18:09 mark off a rebound, and her second came with 14:55 remaining in the game as she took a Coleman pass in the circle, spun, and shot it in the corner of the cage with what would prove to be the Cavaliers last goal of the day.
Virginias Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) started in the cage and made four saves, all in the first half, to notch her second shutout of the season. With the win, the Cavaliers have now won 26 matches at home against out-of-state, non-conference opponents.
Individual Notes:Elwell Climbing up Charts: Meredith Elwell has climbed into the top-15 all-time in the ACC in scoring. Her 133 career points ranks 15th overall and her 54 goals is good enough for 13th in ACC history.
The big 3-0! (no, not THAT one!): Laura Lindsay’s assist to Jess Coleman in the Michigan game was her 30th career assist. Lo is only the 5th Cavalier in school history to record 30 career assists.
100A+: Becky Worthington, who already has two shutouts on the season, recently recorded her 100th career save. She ranks 10th all-time at UVA and needs just 23 saves to move into 8th all-time in the Cavalier record books.
Looking Ahead:
Sitting with the Spiders: Virginia holds a 22-0-1 record against Richmond all time, with the only tie coming in 1992. The Cavaliers have outscored the Spiders 82-12 in that period.
Heels Hover on Horizon: Virginia opens ACC play with a trip to UNC on Sunday. The Cavaliers have a 3-2 record against the Heels in the last two years, and 1999 is the first season since 1982 that the Hoos have entered Chapel Hill with a winning streak against UNC.
