Virginia Field Hockey To Open 1999 Campaign On Road

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. —The Cavaliers usher in the Jessica Wilk era onSaturday as they travel to Amherst, Mass. where they will take on theMinutewomen of UMass on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1:00. Virginia will then faceQuinnipiac in Amherst at 1:00 on Sunday, Sept. 5. Wilk, who was namedVirginia’s seventh head field hockey coach in December, takes over thereins from former National Coach of the Year Missi Sanders.
Wilk is no stranger to the Virginia field hockey program, as shewas the assistant who helped the Cavaliers reach the #1 ranking in 1996,1997 and 1998 and advance to the NCAA semifinals for the first time inschool history.
Virginia also welcomes back All-American Meredith Elwell(Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), the school’s fifth leading scorer inhistory who needs only 47 points to move into second place all-time. Her 52career goals ranks fourth in school history. A former ACC Rookie of theYear, Elwell looks to maintain the excellence of Virginia field hockey. Hermate on the front line, fellow New Jersey product Lorraine Vizzuso(Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) already ranks 20th all-time at Virginia inscoring and needs just 30 points to move into the top-10. Both Elwell andVizzuso are former members of the United States Under-21 team and rank asone of the fastest front lines in the nation.
The midfield welcomes back US National Team Member Jessica Coleman(Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) and two former members of the USA nationalteams in Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and three-yearstarter Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield). Lindsay ranks fifthall-time at Virginia in assists and holds the record for assists as asophomore with 19.
Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) returns in thecage for the Cavaliers following her summer with the United States Under-20National Team. The nation’s top-ranked goalie in 1997, Worthington looks todevelop her skills as a leader on defense for the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers return home on Friday, Sept. 10 as they host Michiganat 4:00 pm.
