FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – After winning his round of 16 match, University ofVirginia third-year tennis player Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The LovettSchool) lost in the quarterfinals of the 2000 Rolex NationalIntercollegiate Indoor Championships Friday afternoon at Brookhaven CountryClub.
Vahaly, seeded third, defeated 11th-ranked Shuon Madden of Texas A&M 3-6,6-3, 6-3 in the round of 16 Friday morning, but lost to sixth-seeded AlexKim of Stanford 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon.Vahaly opened the tournament with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over 24th-rankedTyler Cleveland of Iowa in Thursday’s first round.
In the doubles portion of the Rolex National Intercollegiate IndoorChampionships, the Cavalier doubles tandem of fourth-year John Winter(Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker (Alexandria,Va./St. Stephens) was eliminated from the main draw with a first round lossThursday evening,. Corker and Winter lost 6-3, 7-5 to top-seeded GeoffAbrams and Alex Kim of Stanford in the first round of the 16-teamtournament.
After falling in the first round of the doubles tournament, Winter andCroker moved into the consolation bracket. In the first round ofconsolation play Thursday evening, the ninth-ranked UVa duo recorded aninjury walkover victory over second-seeded Steve Huss and Tiago Ruffoni ofAuburn. Winter and Croker are scheduled to play Boise State’s Leif Meinekeand Wesley Moodie in the consolation semifinals Friday. Meineke and Moodieare ranked 11th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)rankings.
