CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and divingteams concluded the dual meet portion of their seasons with victories overACC rival Maryland on Saturday at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. Theninth-ranked Virginia men posted a 125.5-77.5 victory over the Terps toimprove to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. The seventh-rated UVa womenrecorded their 20th-consecutive dual meet win dating back to the 1997-98season with a 138-83 triumph over Maryland. The Cavaliers finish the dualmeet portion of their schedule with an 8-0 overall record and a 5-0 mark inthe ACC.

Third-year Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md./Sherwood) posted two wins for theCavalier men, who won nine of 13 events in the 125.5-77.5 victory. Grimeswon the 1000 and 500 freestyles with times of 9:13.46 and 4:30.82,respectively. Fourth-year Doak Finch (Southern Pines, N.C./O’Neal) won the200 butterfly in 1:45.93, while third-year Troy Johnson (St. George,Utah/Dixie) touched in 1:40.04 to win the 200 free. First-year ChrisMousetis (Newport News, Va./Woodside) posted a winning time of 1:49.29 inthe 200 backstroke. Mousetis, Finch, Johnson and second-year Ed Moses(Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) teamed to win the 400 medley relay with a timeof 3:16.49, the fifth fastest collegiate time of the season. Moses clockedan exhibition time of 1:58.18 in the 200 breaststroke. His time was morethan six seconds faster than first-year teammate Jonathan Baird (Nashville,Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy), who won with a time of 2:05.62. First-yearGuy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) rounded out theswimming event winners for the UVa men with his victory in the 200individual medley (1:51.48). Second-year Joe Piorkowski (Easton,Pa./Easton) won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 302.62points.

Virginia first-years Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and MirjanaBosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) combined to win five individualevents in the Cavaliers’ 138-83 win. Virginia won the first 11 events ofthe 13-event competition. Lane set school, pool and ACC records in winningthe 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.35. She also won the 500 free(4:45.87) and the 200 free (1:50.10). Bosevska shattered the pool andschool record in winning the 1000 free with a time of 9:42.84. She alsowon the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.89. Fourth-year Rebecca Cronk(Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle), swimming in her final home meet, won apair of individual events and also swam the anchor leg on the Cavaliers’winning 400 medley relay. Cronk was victorious in the 50 (23.33) and 100free (51.24) and helped the 400 medley relay to a winning time of 3:46.78.Third-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s), second-year KateSlonaker (Summit, N.J./Oak Knoll) and fourth-year Kori Forster (NewOrleans, La./Benjamin Franklin) also swam legs on the relay. Iffland wonthe 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.94 as well. Third-year CourtneyColbert (Brown Deer, Wisc./Rufus King) won both diving competitions for the’Hoos. She scored 267.95 to win the one-meter diving competition and thentallied 273 points to take the three-meter event.

The Cavalier women’s swimming and diving team returns to action February17-19 when they attempt to win their third consecutive ACC championship.The ACC Championships take place in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Virginia men’sswimming and diving team takes to the water February 24-26 when they defendtheir 1999 ACC Championship in Chapel Hill.
