EAST LANSING, Mich. – University of Virginia wrestler SteveGarland (Middleton, N.Y./Middleton) competed in the 2000 NationalWrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic which was held atMichigan State University in the Jenison Wrestling Arena.
Garland (ranked7th in the country) faced Minnesota’s Leroy Vega (ranked 3rd in thecountry) in the 125 pound match. Vega inched out to a 2-1 lead after thefirst period, and then extended his lead to 9-3 after two periods en routeto a 9-4 victory in the match. All four of Garland’s points were earned onescapes.
Garland and Vega were meeting for the second time this season intonight’s match. The two wrestlers had met once before earlier this seasonwhen they competed in the 1999 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate WrestlingInvitational, which was held at the Star of the Desert Arena in Las Vegas,Nevada. Vega topped Garland by the score of 6-3 in that match, handingGarland his first loss of the ’99 season to snap his season-high nine-matchwin streak.
Garland has had an outstanding wrestling season thus far. Hecurrently stands 20-3 overall, 5-1 in dual match action. He has recordedsix technical fall victories, four wins by fall and two victories by majordecision.
Garland claimed the individual championship titles in both theKeystone Classic and Virginia State Intercollegiate Wrestling Tournamentsand finished runner-up at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Wrestling Invitationaland the American University Congressional Cup.
The NWCA, a professional organization for amateur wrestlingcoaches, selected the athletes and coaches who were invited to participatein the 2000 NWCA All-Star Classic. Garland was one of only 20 selectedwrestlers chosen from the entire country to participate in the event.
