CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 22nd-ranked University of Virginia men’s tennisteam improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory of Columbia Fridayevening, February 11, at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers wonfive of six singles matches and swept the three doubles matches in thevictory.
UVa’s #1 doubles team of third-years Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The LovettSchool) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), ranked 23rdby the ITA, defeated Akrem Zaman and Salil Seshadri 8-1. Fourth-year JohnWinter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker(Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens), who are ninth in the ITA doubles rankings,beat Columbia’s Peter Holik and Mickey Kaplan 8-5 at #2 doubles. In the #3doubles match, the Cavalier tandem of third-years Robert Abendroth(Lafayette, La./St. Stephens) and Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./ChapelHill) posted an 8-4 victory over Parle Jefferson and Donny Opici.
In singles action, Vahaly, the ITA’s third-ranked singles player, defeatedZaman 6-3, 6-2 at #1. Montgomery, ranked 41st in the nation, posted a 6-4,6-1 win over Seshadri at #2 singles. At #3 singles, Winter recorded a 6-3,6-4 win over Dillerman. Croker, at #4 singles was the only UVa player tolose, as he suffered a 6-4, 7-6 loss to Holik. Hunter notched a 7-6, 6-3win over Oscar Chow at #5 singles, while Abendroth rounded out Virginia’ssingles winners with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at #6.
Virginia returns to action on Wednesday, February 16, when it travels toWilliamsburg, Va., for a 6:00 p.m. match against William & Mary.
