CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech Hokies won the first threebouts of the match, including a pin and a tech fall, en route to a 23-20decision over the Cavaliers today in Memorial Gymnasium. Steve Garland(Middleton, N.Y./Middleton) won his 22nd match of the season to help theCavaliers close the early deficit, but the Hokies pulled away for thevictory.
After the losses at 165, 174, and 184, the Cavaliers won the nextthree matches to cut the deficit to 14-9. Jimi Massey (Williamsport,Md./Williamsport) won 8-7 at 197 and Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury)also won a close one, 4-2, at heavyweight. Garland, who is ranked seventhin the nation at 125, pulled out a 5-1 decision to get the Cavaliers withinfive at 9-14.
But the Hokies stormed back with a decision and a pin in the nexttwo bouts to take an insurmountable lead at 23-9. John Pozniak (StateCollege, Pa./State College) scored a technical fall for the Cavaliers at149 with a 20-4, but it was not enough. Virginia took the 157 bout byforfeit, accounting for the final score of 23-20.
The Cavaliers, now 3-5, return to action on Wednesday, February 16against ACC rival Maryland. The match is slated to begin at 7:00. Techimproves to 7-6.
