CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The University of Virginia women’s tennis teamdefeated Marshall 7-2 Sunday afternoon at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 6-1 in dual match play in the1999-2000 season.
Virginia won five of six singles matches to take a 5-1 lead enteringdoubles play. The ‘Hoos then won two of three doubles matches for the 7-2triumph.
In singles play, third-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) wonat #2 singles 6-0, 6-4 over Ana Ceretto, while first-year HenrietteWilliams (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) posted 6-1, 6-0 victory over SheelaCabiling at #3 singles. At #4, Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake WorthChristian) triumphed 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 over Kelly Peller. First-year JenniferTuchband (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) defeated Karolina Pierko 6-3, 6-0 at #5singles. Third-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) earned aforfeit win at #6 singles. UVa second-year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah,N.J./Mahwah) lost at #1 singles to Anna Mitina 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
In doubles competition, O’Donnell and second-year Christine Kim (McLean,Va./Bishop Ireton) notched an 8-5 victory over Peller and Pierko at #2doubles. Weaver and Tuchband were also victorious as they earned an 8-2win at #3 doubles over Cabiling and Elisa Conlon. Virginia’s number onedoubles team of Schweer and Cook, who are ranked 49th in the nation, lostto Mitina and Ceretto 8-1.
Virginia returns to action on Saturday, February 19 when it travels toBlacksburg, Va. for a 1:00 p.m. match against Virginia Tech.
