WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The 21st-ranked University of Virginia men’s tennisteam defeated 42nd-ranked William & Mary 4-3 this evening in Williamsburg,Va. The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 3-0 on the season, while theTribe falls to 8-2.
After winning the singles point by taking two of the three doubles matches,Virginia clinched the team victory by splitting the six singles matches.
UVa’s #1 doubles team of third-years Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The LovettSchool) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), ranked 24thby the ITA, defeated Patrick Brown and Mehdy Karbid 8-3. Fourth-year JohnWinter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker(Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens), who are 23rd in the ITA doubles rankings,beat 53rd-ranked Jody Strik and Tim Csontos 8-3 at #2 doubles. In the #3doubles match, the Cavalier tandem of fourth-year Jeff Dawkins (Atlanta,Ga./The Lovett School) and second-year Jason Romesburg (Waynesboro,Va./Waynesboro) dropped an 8-3 decision to Brian Lubin and Martin Larsson.
In singles action, Vahaly, the ITA’s fourth-ranked singles player, defeatedBrown in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-0. Montgomery, ranked 54th in the nation,defaulted to Strik with the match knotted at one set apiece, 4-6, 7-6. At#3 singles, Winter lost a three-set match to Soeters, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.Croker, at #4 singles, and Hunter at #5, posted identical 7-5, 6-4victories over William & Mary’s Karbid and Lubin, respectively. At #6singles, first-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy)lost to Csontos 7-6, 6-2.
Virginia returns to action on Sunday, February 27 when it hosts MichiganState at 6:30 p.m. at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
