CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – First-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) setan Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Meet record by winning her 500freestyle preliminary in a time of 4:44.90. Lane set the record in theopening session of the 2000 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships Thursdayat Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the campus of the University of NorthCarolina. Lane is one of seven Virginia swimmers that qualified for finalswith their performances in Thursday’s preliminaries.
Lane’s time of 4:44.90 in the 500 free is a personal-best and itautomatically qualifies her for the NCAA Championships March 16-18 inIndianapolis, Ind. She broke the former ACC Meet record of 4:45.66, set byMitzi Kremer of Clemson. The time was also just 43 hundredths of a secondshy of the UVa school record. Betsey O’Connell holds the Virginia recordin the 500 free with a time of 4:44.47 set in 1988.
The Cavaliers had two other swimmers advance to the finals of the 500 free.Fourth-year Laura Sullivan (Sarasota, Fla./Peddie School) finished secondin the 500 with a personal-best time of 4:48.98 and met the NCAA “B”qualifying standard. Fourth-year Emily Carrig (Richmond, Va./DouglasFreeman) also met the NCAA “B” standard by finishing fourth in the 500 freewith a time of 4:50.50.
In the 50 free, fourth-year Rebecca Cronk (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle)won the preliminaries with a time of 22.88, which meets the NCAA “B”qualifying standard. Cronk is the defending ACC Champion in the 50 free.Third-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) finished eighth witha time of 23.43 to join Cronk in the finals. Iffland’s time also met theNCAA “B” mark.
First-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) and third-yearValerie Oswald (Charlottesville, Va./McLean) finished second and third,respectively, in the prelims of the 200 individual medley to advance to thefinals. Both Bosevska (2:01.75) and Oswald (2:03.12) met the NCAA “B”standard with their times.
Finals for the 50 and 500 free as well as the 200 IM will be conductedtonight beginning at 7:00 p.m. Results can be obtained on UNC’s website atwww.tarheelblue.com
