LAS VEGAS – The Virginia softball team lost the first two games ofits 2000 season on Thursday, February 17. The Cavaliers dropped theirseason-opener to Portland State 4-0 and then fell to UNLV 3-0 later in theday.
Against Portland State, the Vikings’ Morgan Seibert threw a two-hit shutoutto lead PSU to a 4-0 win over Virginia. Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn,Pa./Conestoga) took the loss as she pitched a complete game and gave upfour runs, only one of which was earned. She struck out eight and walkedfour. Fourth-year second baseman Amy Peay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) andfirst-year catcher Britton Gore (Vienna, Va./James Madison) accounted forUVa’s two hits with singles.
The Vikings used two walks and a Cavalier error two plate a pair of runs inthe first inning. Portland State put the game out of reach with a pair ofruns in the top of the seventh to make the final score 4-0.
In the game against UNLV, the Virginia bats where silenced by the Rebels’Nicole Traux, who threw a two-hit shutout. Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn(Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) took the loss for the ‘Hoos. She gaveup eight hits while striking out five and walking two.
UNLV scored a pair of runs in the second inning. Shortstop RachelGoodpaster led off the inning with a solo home run and center fielder EricaVollweiler added a two-out RBI single to center. UNLV added an insurancerun in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 3-0.
Peay and right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) bothhad singles for Virginia.
The Cavaliers return to action tomorrow, Friday, when they begin play inthe 2000 UNLV Classic. Virginia opens the tournament by playing Fordham at1:00 p.m. At 6:00 p.m. Friday, Virginia will play California-SantaBarbara. On Saturday, UVa takes on 12th-ranked California at 6:00 p.m. andUtah at 8:30 p.m. Virginia closes out play in the tournament with a 1:00p.m. game against 11th-ranked Oregon State on Sunday.
