CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – Virginia looks to make its move in the ACC as it hits the road to faceClemson on Thursday.
The 21st-ranked Cavaliers (19-6, 11-2) are tied with No. 7 North CarolinaState for first place in the conference. N.C. State faces No. 14 Duke onThursday, then heads to Virginia on Sunday for what could be a pivotal showdownwith the Cavaliers.
Virginia won its second straight game but had its lowest point total of theseason in a 57-55 win over Arkansas State last Sunday.
Senior guard Renee Robinson connected on two free throws with 0.4 secondsleft to lift the Cavaliers.
Junior forward Dean’na Mitchelson led Virginia with 12 points and sophomoreguard Telisha Quarles added 11.
Freshmen standout Schuye LaRue, who leads the team with 14.4 points pergame, sat out last Sunday’s contest due to an unspecified team violation.
LaRue leads all ACC rookies in scoring and is fifth overall in theconference. She is sixth in rebounding with 7.5 per game, and her .584field-goal percentage is tops in the ACC.
Clemson suffered a 67-58 road loss to N.C. State last Sunday despite acareer-high 19-point effort from senior guard Angie Cossey.
Cossey, averaging 9.1 points per game, was 7-of-13 from the field, including3-for-8 from 3-point range.
The loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Lady Tigers, who will belooking to avenge a 77-74 double-overtime loss to Virginia on Jan. 20.
Freshmen guard Chrissy Floyd had just seven points against N.C. State butleads the team in scoring with 12.7 points per game and 13.9 in conferenceplay.
Clemson is 8-1 at home, including a 4-1 mark against ACC opponents. Virginiais 4-2 on the road in ACC play.
Virginia holds a 27-21 edge in the all-time series but is just 10-11 againstClemson at Littlejohn Coliseum.
