CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia first-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje,Macedonia/Trinity Prep) shattered her own ACC Meet record, which she setearlier in the day in the prelims, and also broke her own school record inwinning the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:13.77 Friday evening atthe 2000 Women’s ACC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Maurice J.Koury Natatorium. Despite winning four of six events, the eighth-rankedCavaliers have fallen further behind a very deep 16th-ranked North Carolinasquad.
UNC leads the ACC Championships after two days of competition with 569.50points, while Virginia is second with 467.50. Clemson is a distance thirdwith 309.50 points, followed by Maryland (274), Florida State (242.50),N.C. State (236) and Duke (104). The finals for the remaining seven eventswill be held Saturday evening.
In the preliminaries earlier Friday, Bosevska set the ACC Meet record inthe 400 IM with a time of 4:15.83 and then shaved nearly two seconds offthat record time in winning the final in 4:13.77. On Thursday, Bosevskaset ACC Meet and UVa school records in winning the 200 IM in a time of2:00.59.
In addition to her record-setting performance in the 400 IM Friday night,Bosevska anchored the Cavaliers’ 800 free relay team that established anACC Meet record with a winning time of 7:16.63. The ‘Hoos time of 7:16.63is the second fastest in school history and broke UNC’s former ACC Meetrecord time of 7:18.12. Joining Bosevska on the winning relay werefirst-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence), and fourth-years EmilyTrakas (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and Emily Carrig (Richmond, Va./DouglasFreeman). UVa’s time met the NCAA “B” qualifying standard.
Virginia also won the 200 medley relay in an NCAA “B” qualifying time of1:41.33. Third-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) led offthe relay in the backstroke, followed by second-year Kate Slonaker (Summit,N.J./Oak Knoll) in the breaststroke. Fourth-year Kori Forster (NewOrleans, La./Benjamin Franklin) swam the butterfly leg, while fourth-yearRebecca Cronk (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) swam the anchor freestyleleg. Forster also won the 100 butterfly with a personal-best and NCAAautomatic qualifying time of 54.09 seconds. Her time was just one-tenth ofa second shy of the UVa school record. Forster rounded out a busy eveningby winning the consolation final of the 100 breaststroke with a time of1:04.67.
In the 200 free, the Cavaliers took the fifth, sixth and seventh spots.Carrig was fifth with a time of 1:49.90, while Trakas was sixth (1:50.40)and fourth-year Laura Sullivan (Sarasota, Fla./Peddie School) was seventh(1:50.43). All three times meet the NCAA “B” qualifying standard. Ifflandfinished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.84, while Slonakerwas sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.60). Both times are NCAA “B”qualifying marks. UVa third-year Valerie Oswald (Charlottesville,Va./McLean) place eighth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:28.95 to round outVirginia’s competitors in Friday night’s finals.
