BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 54th-ranked University of Virginia women’s tennisteam won two of three doubles matches to break a 3-3 tie after singles playto beat Virginia Tech 5-4 Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burelson TennisCenter. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 7-1 in dual match play inthe 1999-2000 season, including 4-0 in the spring season. The Hokies, whoare ranked 75th in the nation, fall to 3-1 on the season.
In singles play, the Cavaliers split the six matches with Virginia Tech.Third-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) won at #2 singles6-3, 6-4 over Michelle Martaus, while #4 Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach,Fla./Lake Worth Christian) triumphed 6-1, 6-0 over Antoinella Pozzi.First-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) defeated BridgetBruner 7-5, 6-1 at #5 singles to round out UVa’s winners.
Second-year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) lost at #1 singles to InesKhelifi 7-6, 1-6, 6-2. At #3 singles, first-year Henriette Williams(Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Kristin Stubbs,while third-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) fell to KristinLanio 6-1, 6-3 in the #6 singles slot.
Virginia earned the victory by winning two of three doubles matches. At #2doubles, O’Donnell and second-year Christine Kim (McLean, Va./BishopIreton) notched an 8-1 victory over Stubbs and Lanio. Weaver and Tuchbandwere also victorious as they earned an 8-5 win at #3 doubles over Martausand Bruner. Virginia’s number one doubles team of Schweer and Cook lost toKhelifi and Pozzi 8-3.
Virginia returns to action on Sunday, February 27 when it travels toRichmond, Va. for a 12:00 noon match against 31st-ranked VirginiaCommonwealth.
