LAS VEGAS – The Virginia softball lost a heart-breaker to11th-ranked Oregon State 2-0 in eight innings on Sunday in the UNLV Classicat Sunset Park in Las Vegas. The Cavaliers conclude play in the tournamentwith a 1-4 record and stand at 1-6 overall on the year.
The Cavaliers played seven scoreless innings against the 11th-rankedBeavers, but gave up two unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning andlost 2-0. UVa had two runners on base with no outs in the bottom of theeighth, but Oregon State pitcher Tarrah Beyster was able to retire the nextthree batters to earn the win.
UVa fourth-year pitcher Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) turned in anexcellent performance as she allowed two unearned runs on five hits. Shestruck out five batters and walked three. Zagol also helped her own causeby recording seven assists in the game.
First-year shortstop Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) led the ‘Hoosoffensively with a double, a single and a walk.
The Cavaliers return to action Friday through Sunday, February 25-27 whenthey play three doubleheaders in the Lady ‘Back Invitational inFayetteville, Ark. Virginia plays host Arkansas on February 25 at 5:00p.m. On February 26, UVa plays Missouri at 12 noon, followed by Notre Dameon February 27 at 11:00 a.m.
