CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – Telisha Quarles scored 14 of her 17 points inthe first half Sunday and No. 21 Virginia beat No. 7 North Carolina State forthe second time this season, 60-51.
Virginia (21-6, 12-2 ACC) has won all four of its games against Top 10teams. The Cavaliers’ 13th straight home victory also gave them a 1 1/2-game leadover the Wolfpack and No. 14 Duke in the conference.
North Carolina State (20-6, 11-4) fell to 3-2 since Feb. 3, when NaismithAward candidate Summer Erb was sidelined because of stress fractures in herleft foot.
The Wolfpack shot just 26.4 percent as No. 2 scorer Kaayla Chones missed 7of 9 shots, and No. 3 Tynesha Lewis and Monica Bates each missed 10 of 12.
North Carolina State got as close as six several times in the second half,but each time Virginia responded and rebuilt its margin to a comfortable level.
Renee Robinson and Schuye LaRue added 10 points each for Virginia, whichshot just 32.7 percent. LaRue added 11 rebounds, six blocks and one of theCavaliers’ seven 3-pointers. The Wolfpack, by comparison, was 1-for-20 frombehind the arc.
Quarles was the difference in the first half as the Cavaliers took a 32-25lead. The sophomore was 4-for-6 from 3-point range and scored 14 points wheneveryone else on the court had trouble making most anything.
North Carolina State missed 11 straight shots and had four turnovers betweenits first basket 55 seconds in and its second more than seven minutes later,yet trailed just 8-6 when Monica Bates hit that shot with 11:37 left.
Virginia got its first bucket on a drive by LaRue 31 seconds in, then missedsix shots in a row until Quarles’ first three with 14:08 left.
