Softball Drops Two Games In Second Day At UNLV Classic

LAS VEGAS – The Virginia softball team lost to 12th-rankedCalifornia 6-1 and Utah 4-3 on Saturday in the second day of play in theUNLV Classic at Sunset Park in Las Vegas. The Cavaliers fell to 1-5 on theseason with the losses.

In the 6-1 loss to 12th-ranked Cal, the Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in thetop of the first, but the Bears came back to tie the game at 1-1 in thebottom of the third. Cal scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning totake the lead for good.

Third-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury)opened the game with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice byfourth-year third baseman Karen Breshears (Camarillo, Calif./CornerstoneChristian). Young scored on a single by first-year designated playerStephanie Calhoun (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel).

Fourth-year pitcher Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) took the loss.She gave up nine hits and six runs, with four being earned. Zagol struckout two batters and walked one.

Virginia dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Utah Saturday evening. The Utesscored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pullout the victory. Fourth-year center fielder Corinne Good (Ephrata,Pa./Ephrata) was two for three with a pair of doubles, while first-yearshortstop Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) and fourth-year leftfielder Jen Krill (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) both had apair of singles. Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central BucksEast) pitched well in defeat as she allowed only two earned runs in acomplete-game effort.

After Utah scored a run in the first inning, Virginia tied the game at 1-1in the top of the second inning when first-year Katie Weinberg (Reston,Va./South Lakes), pinch-running for Calhoun, scored on a throwing error bythe Utah catcher. A sacrifice fly by Breshears in the third scored Krillto give UVa a 2-1 lead. A single by Rojas plated Young to up the advantageto 3-1 in the fifth. The Utes answered with a home run in the bottom ofthe fifth and then scored two unearned runs in the sixth for the 4-3victory.
