CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia women’s swimming team couldn’t match NorthCarolina’s depth and lost in its bid for a third consecutive ACCChampionship Saturday evening at the 2000 Women’s ACC Swimming and DivingChampionships at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium. Host and 16th-rankedNorth Carolina won the ACC Championship by scoring 842.5 points, while theeighth-ranked Cavaliers finished second with 693.5 points. UVa first-yearCara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) won two more events Saturday eveningand was named the Most Valuable Swimmer of the 22nd annual ACCChampionship. With the two victories, Lane increased her total to four ACCtitles (three individual and one relay) and also set several records in theprocess. She set ACC Meet records in each of the events she won and alsoposted new UVa marks in the 200 fly, 500 free and 1650 free.
Following North Carolina (842.5) and Virginia (693.5) in the team standingswere: Clemson (476.5), Maryland (442), Florida State (395.5), N.C. State(365) and Duke (132). As a team, Virginia won the most events of any schoolwith eight (out of 20 events) at the ACC Championships. UNC won sevenevents, but was able to win the title with tremendous depth.
Lane won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:07.71, more than 14 secondsahead of UVa first-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep).With her time of 16:07.71, Lane set ACC, ACC Meet and Virginia schoolrecords. Lane broke her own ACC record of 16:09.98 set on December 5. Shealso bested the former ACC Meet record by more than 10 seconds. Theprevious record was 16:17.88 by UNC’s Chrissy Miller. Lane won her fourthtitle of the meet by winning the 200 butterfly in a UVa school record timeof 1:58.58.
Bosevska posted a time of 16:22.20 in taking second place in the 1650 free.Virginia finished second in the 400 free relay with a season-best time of3:21.67. Fourth-year Kori Forster (New Orleans, La./Benjamin Franklin),third-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) and fourth-yearsEmily Trakas (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and Rebecca Cronk (Charlottesville,Va./Albemarle) all swam legs on the relay team. Iffland also placed secondin the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:59.52, while Cronk was third in the100 freestyle (50.60). Forster touched in 51.22 to take sixth place in the100 free.
In addition to Lane, the Cavaliers had two other finalists in the 200butterfly. Fourth-years while Laura Sullivan (Sarasota, Fla./PeddieSchool) and Emily Carrig (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) were sixth andseventh, respectively, with times of 2:01.55 and 2:02.68. Third-yearValerie Oswald (Charlottesville, Va./McLean) posted a time of 2:19.00 tograb fifth place in the 200 breaststroke. In the three meter diving,third-year Courtney Colbert (Brown Deer, Wisc./Rufus King) and first-yearAlison Sharp (Newton, Pa./Council Rock) finished seventh and eighthrespectively. Colbert tallied 415.70 points for seventh place, while Sharpscored 404.15 to finish eighth.
