LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Virginia softball team split a pair of games in theopening day of the UNLV Classic on Friday at Sunset Park in Las Vegas. TheCavaliers picked up their first win of the season with a 5-4 eight-inningtriumph over Fordham. UVa then dropped a 3-0 decision to UCSB. Virginiais now 1-3 on the season.
Against Fordham, fourth-year third baseman Karen Breshears (Camarillo,Calif./Cornerstone Christian) led the Cavaliers with three singles and apair of RBI. She was also hit by a pitch to reach base a fourth time inthe game. First-year shortstop Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei)had a pair of hits, including a double.
Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) earned the win with 4.1innings of scoreless relief. She allowed three hits while striking outsix. Second-year Erin Allinder (Norco, Calif./Norco) pitched the first 3.2innings before giving way to Zagol.
UVa took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Rams answeredwith three runs in the bottom of the first and added another run in thesecond to take a 4-2 advantage. RBI singles by third-year right fielderMeaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and Breshears in the fourthand fifth innings, respectively, tied the game at 4-4. The game went intoextra innings tied at 4-4. Fourth-year center fielder Corinne Good(Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) drove in the winning run with a double in the bottomof the eighth inning. Zagol was able to get out of a two-out bases loadedjam in the bottom of the eighth to register the win.
The Cavaliers fell to 1-3 on the year with a 3-0 loss to UCSB. TheGauchos’ Loren Thornburg threw a four-hit shutout in recording the win.Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) took theloss for the ‘Hoos. She gave up seven hits while striking out six andwalking one.
Young, Good, Breshears and second-year Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./LaCosta Canyon) each registered a hit for the Cavaliers.
UCSB scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the second inningwhen they used three singles to plate a single run. The Gauchos added apair of runs in the fourth inning.
